Food shopping can be one of the most arduous tasks that must be performed out side of the home on a regular basis. It can rank right up there with cleaning toilet bowls, taking out the trash, and cleaning up after the dog shredded a newspaper. Do we have to settle for the drudgery or can we change it to a task that is done cheerfully (or at least without disdain)?

Here’s a few helpful hints to tackle the grocery shopping.

Always make a list.

I can’t stress the importance of this, which is why it is number one on this list. Part of the pain of shopping is the bill at the check out line. The pain comes from the fact that we know we bought some really good items but also we bought a lot that we didn’t need. The other pain of food shopping happens on the drive home or a few days later when we go to make a favorite recipe and realize we didn’t buy the main ingredients. Always carry a list.

Stick to the perimeter of the store.

Traveling up and down each isle leads us to over shop. The good deals are going to be on the end caps of each isle or in the bargain isles that camp in the middle of the main isles in a store. When and if you have to venture into the interior of the store, carry your list and only buy the item you need from that section.

Don’t shop hungry.

 It is the job of consumer ad agencies everywhere to get us to buy. They get paid to make things tempting and irresistible. It is way to hard to avoid these tasty tidbits that look so good on the box when we are hungry. Again carry your list and don’t get side tracked.

I enjoy so many more things than shopping. I certainly would rather be doing just about anything else than aimlessly wandering up and down grocery aisles. I make a game of it. Since I really enjoy winning games I've gotten good at this one. I'll set a timer to be out of the store by. I win when I am successful.
